Technical SEO

Technical SEO optimization is a major part of SEO that you can’t ignore. It’s an integral part of SEO just like off-page SEO, on-page SEO, and link building.

You might think that how important technical SEO optimization is? Well with perfect on-page SEO, off-page SEO and proven link building strategies you will still not be able to get your website ranked on the search result pages of Google.

Technical SEO makes it effective for the search engines to crawl your website. If Google can’t crawl your website you can never get it ranked on Google. Technical SEO is just one of the four pillars of SEO.

Here in this article, you will understand what is technical SEO and what are the main factors of Technical SEO? You will also get the top-notch strategies to make your website optimized for Technical SEO. At the end of the article, you will be able to technically optimize your search engines for Google. So that Google can make sense of your content and rank your website accordingly.

Without any further ado let’s get started with the main factors of Technical SEO.

Technical SEO

Site Architecture

You must have a simple site architecture. It helps the search engines to crawl your website efficiently. Because Google sends spiders to your website for crawling. They discover the pages which you updated or added newly.

If your website has a simple site structure you can expect it to rank faster. As Google will not have to crawl many pages to get to your newly updated page.

Fast Website

If you want to get more visitors to your website and climb the ranking of search engines having a fast website is mandatory. If the page load time is high most your visitors are going to leave even before your pages load. This will drastically increase your bounce rate. As a result, your web page will drop in rankings on the search engines.

If your web page has a lot of content it can have a high loading time. Even though most people your page to load in under less than three seconds. However, if you have an infographic on your web page with multiple images and content it can take a couple of seconds more to load.

Google does measure the time to load the first bite of your website. This metric is called “time-to-first-byte” (TTFB). You need to make sure that it’s fast. It needs to be about half of a second.

You need not be relieved though if your TTFB is low. Because in the end if your page does take a long time to load people are simply going to leave your web page before it loads. So make sure that you have great content that has been optimized incorrect format. Then they are going to appear properly to the visitors on screen.

There are hundreds of factors that can make your website load slowly. The most common factors are:

Not-Optimized Images

Content without HTTP compression

More than required CSS image requests

Way too many plugins (WordPress)

No CDN for your website.

Slow web hosting service.

As there are just way too many factors that affect your website speed you need to use tools to figure out your website speed. Guessing it and making fixes blindly will just cause more problems for you. So use tools like “GTMetrix” and “Google Page Speed Insights”. Both of these are useful tools for checking your website speed. They are also going to show you the details about the factors that are slowing down your page speed. So that you can fix those.

XML sitemap

Google will crawl your XML sitemap. The spiders go through the links in the XML file for crawling.

You need to make various sitemaps for your website. Each site map should be for each type of content, like one for video, another for images and the other for articles, etcetera.

If you do not want to create multiple sitemaps that’s up to you. But at least one sitemap is mandatory for the search engines to crawl your website.

You can create your sitemap easily for WordPress. As there are plugins like Google XML sitemap and Yoast SEO plugin. They can create a sitemap in the backend of the platform. All that you have to do is just select the proper options.

Then you have to submit your sitemap to the search engines like Google, Bing, and Yandex. You can even submit to more search engines that take sitemap if you want.

You need to make sure that your sitemap locations are also added to the “robots.txt” file of your website. It can be done easily by getting in the file and checking for the sitemap.

Siloed Site

Siloed site is a simple architecture for the website. This architecture maximizes the crawling of your website. As in this structure of website internal links are done right.

If you want to create a siloed website you need to categorize the content of your website. Create the categories according to the relevance of your content.

When Google spiders come to the home page of a siloed website they can crawl smoothly through the category. As the home page covers all of the categories of your website. Under each category, there are going to be your content or subcategory. It’s totally dependent on your website’s size.

When you have a siloed website it gets easier for Google to understand the niche of your website. Because the categories and content are all arranged according to hierarchy and are very clear to users.

Mobile Friendly

Google cares a lot about the mobile-friendliness of your website. These days most of the people are doing Google search from the smart devices. Like their smartphone and tablet. So when they view your website from their device they expect to see it properly. If your website isn’t mobile friendly no one will see the texts and images on your website properly on mobile devices.

So there are actually two options to do these. The first option is that you can create different versions of your website. One for mobile devices and the other for desktop.

We do not suggest you go with the approach as you will face a lot of trouble to create two versions of your website. Because if you create two versions of your website you will have to deliver content separately. That is quite troublesome for your developers and also uses more resources.

The second approach is that you can create a responsive website. It will adjust the pages of your website according to the size of the device your website is being viewed on. Your website will simply adjust itself to the size of the screens. As a result, there is no need to create two separate versions of your website.

It is worthwhile to keep in mind that Google does mobile first index. As most people use mobile for searching on Google. If you do not make your website mobile friendly you will suffer in Google ranking.

You can easily create your own responsive website with WordPress. It’s very easy and takes just a few simple steps. You can even get started for free. But we suggest you get a hosting service and start your website there.

Crawlability

Crawling error can happen for various reasons. But you need to solve these errors if you want to get your website ranked on search engines.

Google search console (a tool by Google) shows the errors that it gets while crawling your website. You can even try tools like SEMRush. These tools show you the errors and tell you what wrong with your website. If you know the errors you will be able to fix these problems of your website.

Duplicate Content

Your website can’t have any duplicate content. Well if you have not copied and pasted the same content on many pages of your website how can you expect the content to be duplicate?

Well, there are many settings that are on a website which causes the website to have duplicate content. Such as archives of your content.

There are going to be also copies of your content on your website which are not going to be visible from your home page or blog. But it’s there and there are deep links to those content from your home page. Google will index them and discover that your website has duplicate content.

There are many situations for your blog or website to end up having duplicate content. At such cases what can you do?

You need to remove the duplicate content on your website. Removing duplicate content can be easy. But you need to follow some rules.

Like your duplicate content may already be indexed on search engines. At such cases, you would have to do a 301 redirect. SO that the search engines realize that the content has been moved permanently.

Now you might be thinking that you can’t remove content even if it’s a duplicate on your website. If you face such situations you need to use canonical URL.

Canonical URL tells Google that which one is the preferred version of the link that you want to appear on the search result. As a result, Google will not be confused about the page that it has to rank.

You can find out if your website has a duplicate link from various tools. There are paid tools are free tools. Moz, SEMRush is the preferred ones among paid ones. The free option is Google search console. These tools can help you to find which are duplicate content.

Redirect

You can use redirect to tell the search engines if your content has been moved or deleted. But you need to use the right redirect codes for it. Using wrong redirect codes can give search engines completely wrong idea about your web pages.

If you would like to take people to an updated version of the content then you can redirect people to the updated content of your website.

301 Redirect and 302 redirects are the two popular types of redirects. 301 is a permanent redirect, you use it to tell if your content has been moved permanently. 302 redirect is temporary, it says that your content has been moved temporarily.

301 redirect can help you transfer authority of one page to another as the content has been moved permanently. But 302 redirect will not let you transfer any authority. So if you do not require a page in your website anymore do 301 redirects.

There is also 404 error. It’s a pathetic error that no one likes to see, as it basically means that no page was found. Try to fix these as soon as you can.

You can also customize your 404 error page to make it look prettier. At least it will lessen the bad user experience of your visitors.

Broken links of your website can severely damage your reputation. You can check the broken links from tools like Ahrefs or SEMRush.

If someone even does link to your website with a wrong URL it’s surely going to cause problems. Then what you have to do is contact the webmaster and ask to fix the URL of your website.

Structured Data

Google can understand what your content just by crawling through your content. But you can make it easier for Google to understand your content. It increases your content bro get ranked higher and faster.

Most of the people do not use structured data for their website. Because it’s technical, people tend to shy away from structured data. If you want to rank higher than your competitors then you need to use structured data.

You need to follow the schema vocabulary. All you have to do is insert schema terms within the HTML of your website. Yes, you need to touch HTML. A basic understanding of HTML will obviously help. But it isn’t a definite necessity.

Your page will appear as a rich snippet on search engines if you can do schema markup. Rick snippet search results show the rating of your page in stars and also shows a picture. It looks very attractive.

You want to do this because it will increase your click-through rate. While most of the search results on the page will look boring, your one will look attractive. People are going to click on your search listing.

Instead of looking through the massive library of schema you can use Google’s markup helper. It will take you through all the steps.

You can also test if your schema code is correct by using structured data testing tool. The tool validates if all the schema markup is correct or not.
